All paintings © Tristin Florence Sheen
Tris Sheen earned a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts, majoring in ceramics/sculpture with a minor in painting, in 1991, followed by postgraduate studies in 1994.
“I’ve always loved adventure, my parents provided a perfect upbringing that infused me with gypsy blood. Animals are my rock; travel is my inspiration. I want to experience everything! But there’s also a delicate balance for me –creating art requires stability, and that’s hard to find on a rocking boat! I also need to be grounded in one place at times”
Despite this challenge, Tris was determined not to miss out on adventure while still pursuing her artistic goals, resulting in a unique and passionate body of work. Though sculpture was her primary focus, the demands of travel and life at sea made this medium difficult. Over time, her practice evolved, incorporating found objects, paint, plaster, resin, and wood. As her life led her further into remote oceans and island adventures, she transitioned to painting on canvas.
“You can see in many of my paintings the use of mixed media and found objects, each chosen for their connection to a specific place or their intrinsic qualities. I am a very honest person with a deep love for animals and life, which is reflected in my art – truthful and colourful representations of my evolving experiences and concerns. Using photography and a constant visual diary, I’ve captured my interactions with the wild world. Some of these ideas find their way into physical form. I hope you enjoy them and the stories that come with them.”
I’m really concerned for the environment and the creatures that share our planet. When I was 15 I had an encounter with a southern right whale that changed my life forever. I was intrigued and obsessed with whales and their plight, my art work became quite violent with the hate of mans cruelty. At some point to save my self I decided to tackle this subject matter differently. I chose to present the beauty of whales and the ocean and find power through the love and admiration of it instead of its destruction. All I want is for humanity to feel love, to protect what is vulnerable, which is everything including ourselves.”
