Siale’s story began in Tonga, South Pacific, August 2024. To be albino, both her parents carried the rare recessive gene – the odds are extraordinary. She is pure white, devoid of pigment, even her eyes tinged red. Like fine porcelain brought to life, she gleamed beneath the sea radiating light – beautiful, fragile, and utterly unique. I photographed her on a still, rainy day in Ha’apai –a gift, as the clouds softened her luminous skin. Only my daughter, my husband, and I were in the water. When she approached, I held my breath; she felt almost ethereal. Yet, she played and nuzzled her mother like any calf – curious, spirited, alive.

In November 2025, Siale was sighted off Australia’s east coast. My images helped confirm her identity – the same Tongan-born calf, she has made it through her most dangerous first year of life. So we celebrate her resilience, her journey, and the hope that one day she’ll return to Tonga – perhaps with a calf of her own.
